Controversy At The Weigh In For Liam Smith Ahead Of This Weekends Fight Against Welshman Liam Williams
Liam Smith fails to make his weight ahead of his clash for Super Welterweight honours this weekend.
The limit for the Super Welterweight division is at154lb but Smith weighed in at 11 st 1lb 15oz which is almost 2lb over the needed 154lbs. It was announced directly after that he had one hour to shift the weight but conflicting reports now say he was allowed two hours.
After some panic in the camp of Smith, it was announced by the British Board of control that Smith would not return to the scales for the second weigh in. Frank Warren looked on at trainer Joe Gallagher in complete shock as the weight was announced.
Warren had a lot riding on this fight and the evening as a whole signalling a return to the big time under the umbrella of BT Sports.
The fight will still go ahead regardless as now it means that the WBO interim World title will only be on the line for the Welshman Williams.
Liam Williams came in the lowest he has ever recorded for a fight at 152.5lbs looking in fantastic shape and solidifying the rumours that he is in the shape of his career.
After the failed weight by Liam Smith odds are now slightly favouring Williams. This is Smiths first fight back since losing to Canelo Alvarez last September although he did have a small bout in Barcelona over four rounds to make him eligible to fight for the vacant Interim WBO World title.
