Liam Smith vs Liam Williams The Verdict
Over the weekend we saw the first show from Frank Warren promotions and BT Sports with a packed card some say almost too packed with the boxing starting early on Box Nation Tv and then moving over at 8.30 to Bt Sport for the bigger fights.
We saw a busy night with the headline act being Flanagan vs Petrov. The undercards most anticipated fight was most definitely the two Liams. Liam Smith vs Liam Williams.
When the fight was initially announced people favoured Liam” Beefy” Smith heavily saying he had been in against better World class opponents and holding a WBO World title in the past gave him the greater boxing pedigree. As time went on leading up to the fight we got to see more of the Welshman Liam Williams who is by no means a household name yet the tides did start to turn for a number of reasons.
- Gary Lockett is highly regarded as a former World title challenging boxer and now the trainer of Williams the pair seem to have a genuine bond that all the great boxer/trainer relationships need in order to flourish.
- Liam Smith failed the weight! Yes, you heard it he came in almost 2lb over weight which for whatever reason was a plus in the corner of Williams.
- Rumours were rife that Beefy had to lose over 2 stone to get in fight shape as he said himself in a post-fight interview.
As the fight started Liam Williams was actually a slight favourite with the bookies and in the first few rounds it showed as the Welshman moved stealthily beating Smith to the jab and picking his punches well.
A cut was sustained to Liam Smiths right eye in the early rounds which could have ended the bout but the Liverpudlian fought on bravely to hang in on to the later rounds which we all knew would be his best chance of clawing back the fight.
Liam Smith started to show signs as the fight progressed that he had weathered the storm from Williams who looked like he was tiring and the Mexican breaking down style of opponents Beefy favours was taking effect.
Unfortunately, Williams suffered a fight stopping cut that trainer, Gary Lockett refused to allow his man to return to the ring calling time on a fantastic fight that has a lot of unanswered questions.
What I can tell you about Liam Smith vs Liam Williams
Liam Williams was ahead on all 3 judges scorecards according to reporters after the fight.
Liam Smith was most definitely finding his range and coming on strong in the later rounds.
Williams had fought a blinder of a fight especially in the earlier rounds but was showing signs of tiring.
The cut forced the fight to stop just as this was heating up.
Post fight Liam Smith said he owed Williams a rematch for not making weight.
So I guess the biggest question we need answers to now is when is the rematch, Frank?
