Liam Smith V Liam Williams Head To Head
Liam Williams Leading A New Crop of Talented Welsh Boxers
Liam Williams the Boxer from the Clydach Vale Rhondda Wales takes on his toughest task this upcoming weekend April 8th in Manchester televised on BT Sport and Box Nation against Liam Smith in the Super Welterweight division. Seen too many as a breakthrough fight for Williams that can catapult him to further big fights if he can outbox the tough Liam Smith who lost last time out to the great Canelo Alvarez.
To many Liam Williams may not be a household name yet but we here at Boxing News Hub rate him highly and believe this a fantastic matchup and could be a great boxing spectacle. When the fight was first announced a lot of people believed Smith was the better boxer who boasted being in against classier opposition and would win the fight easily but as time has progressed and the training camps have taken place many pundits are now saying this is a 50/50 bout for the both boxers which we heavily agree with.
Liam Williams Boxing Writers Young Boxer of the year 2016
Liam Williams Boxer 16-0-1 who was named the Boxing Writers Young Boxer of the year 2016 is the current British and Commonwealth Super Welterweight Champion. The former captain of the Welsh Amateur Boxing team boasts an impressive amateur career fighting in European and World tournaments winning numerous medals. Liam started boxing at the age of 9 for no other reason than he liked the look of the sport.
Since turning professional he has had an impressive winning streak winning 16 fights 11 of those fights by KO. Here he is stopping Gary Corcoran in the 11th round in arguably his toughest matchup to date.
Stablemate Jay Harris the Commonwealth flyweight champion believes Liam Williams is leading a new Welsh crop of talent destined for greatness in the ring over the next few years. Extra spice is added to the fight as both Liam Williams and Liam Smith are now fighting for the WBO Interim World title at the Manchester arena promoted by Frank Warren and will be shown on BT Sport.
Questions About The Interim Title?
- When a champion of one weight division is unable to defend his or her title for medical, legal or other reasons like a vacation of the weight class altogether then two highly ranked contenders may fight for the title.
- Once the original champion can return in this case it would be Alvarez he must fight against the Interim Champion in a “unification bout”. The winner of this final fight is then crowned “undisputed champion” If the original champion Alvarez does not return to the weight class as is expected then the Interim Champion becomes WBO undisputed champion.
This will be music to the ears of Smith who has the chance to win back his old title he lost to Saul Canelo Alvarez. Smith lost the WBO Super-Welterweight title last September, rumours are saying that the Mexican will not defend his title as he is fighting Julio Cesar Chavez Jnr in a catchweight bout at 164.5lbs.
Smith has been rumoured to want a rematch with Canelo to avenge the loss saying he could do a million times better next time out. It was well publicised that he had one of his worse training camps leading up to the biggest fight of his career.
That being said Canelo outboxed Smith in every round and definitely showed Williams that there are plenty of weaknesses to exploit in the defence of the former champ from Liverpool.
The Prediction on Liam Williams vs Liam Smith
Liam Smith knows his distance and works the inside very well. His shot selection is the best of any British boxer and rightly is the favourite going into this fight albeit not by much. He has been in with higher level opponents and has more experience.
We believe if Williams comes out ready to box smart, and to takes the early rounds keeping his cool he is more than capable of beating “Beefy” Smith who may have one eye on future fights and could be writing Williams off as an easy fight. Williams can bang with both hands and is tough and strong enough for the job.
